| The
Ostrich Inn
The Ostrich Inn make the
proud claim of being third oldest pub in England.
The Ostrich as it now stands dates from about 1500,
but there had been an Inn on the site for nearly 400
years before then.
Many stories surround
this building, the most famous being that of a murderous
innkeeper called Jarman.
Jarman and his wife had
an ingenious method of stealing from lone wealthy travellers
that happened to stay at the Inn. They would lodge
them in the best room in the Inn that had a very ornate
bed. Making sure the guest had been very well
entertained with food and much drink they would escort
him to his room and when the victim was asleep they
would raise the end of the bed by pulling out iron pins
in the kitchen below. A cauldron of liquor was
positioned to receive the sleeping innocent and he was
either scalded, drowned or both.
When he was finally caught,
and knew he was condemned to hang, Jarman boasted that
he had murdered no fewer than sixty people this way.
The Ostrich Inn is now
home to the Colnbrook Fire Tender and Colnbrook Clock. |
